The area has an almost meditative pace which seems entirely appropriate. Since the Middle Ages, millions of Christian pilgrims have walked the Camino de Santiago route, which wiggles its way across the region's northern reaches towards Spain. But, more than anything, Aveyron is a place of villages. It has more official Les Plus Beaux Villages than any other region: eight within an hours drive of the house. There are ancient hamlets balanced on ridges, villages pressed into the sides of valleys, settlements wedged into the rippling green hillsides, each with their own stories to tell. There are a few great little restaurants to explore, the best being L’Air Du Temps. There is a mountain bike and kayak hire centre (AAGAC) at the base of the town with a zip line facility if you’re up for it! In the tourist office, you can pick up maps for locals walks and bike rides in the area. Villefranche was originally a trading centre and on the Compostela route. The arcaded main square, in the centre of the town, is dominated by the church tower which is almost 60m high. La Peyriere is sat within some of France's most distinguished regions for food, including a range of protected 'AOC' produce. Within an hour of the house you'll find production of Roquefort, Confit de Canard, Foie Gras as well as the rearing of Aubrac and Limousin cattle. You'll also be able to discover the less well known but equally delicious foods of the region. These include Aligot a creamy, cheesy mashed potato, La Fouace a hearty pastry and Cabécous one of the most delightful goats cheeses. Markets run every day in the region and local producers also sell directly, you may come across a few as you drive around. There's in fact a cracking little fromagerie behind the Intermarche in La Fouillade, selling a range of cheese, home made yoghurts and also gold top milk. We're incredibly fortunate to be directly linked to a varied network of mountain bike trails that span out across Najac, Villefranche and beyond. If you ever get bored, there are another 30 trails in St Antonin! On the road, the road cycling is phenomenal, not only are the roads incredibly smooth but they're quiet too, something very different to home. When the temperature rises many of our guests love to head down the river and enjoying the flowing waters and rapids of the Aveyron. As this is the Aveyron, the traffic is favourable and the roads are pristine, ribbons of impeccable asphalt. The weather outside of July and August is perfect for riding. and incredibly smooth asphalt. The garage, or cave, has been setup to accommodate groups of bikers with racks, basic tools and space to clean and service your dearly beloved. The terrain is varied with plenty of singletrack, rocky descents and incredible views. The trail system in France is graded like in a ski resort: green for tootle, black for full throttle. Maps are available in the Najac tourist office for €3. The cave is equipped with bike racks and basic equipment to service your bike each day. La Peyriere is sat within some of France's most distinguished regions for food, including a range of protected 'AOC' produce. Within an hour of the house you'll find production of Roquefort, Confit de Canard, Foie Gras as well as the rearing of Aubrac and Limousin cattle. You'll also be able to discover the less well known but equally delicious foods of the region. These include Aligot a creamy, cheesy mashed potato, La Fouace a hearty pastry and Cabécous, a locally produced goats cheese. Markets run every day in the region and local producers also sell directly, you may come across a few as you drive around. The Laguiole knife can be recognised by its small forged bee logo. It’s possible to visit the museum to see the process for yourself. In addition, it’s the location of a lovely family ski resort, the closest to La Peyriere. As you paddle along you'll have time to admire the remarkable scenery that these rivers have carved out over the millennia: magnificent gorges, rocky defiles, cliff-lined meanders and more We are close to two fantastic rivers for kayaking. The Viaur is nearest and can be accessed at Bor et Bar, however kayak hire is available at Laguepie. AAGAC, based in Najac is on the Aveyron and is a popular spot for kayak hire. They offer a variety of trips, from 2 hours to a full day. Saint Antonin is another great spot for kayak hire further down the Aveyron, try Nature Escapade. The diversity of wines is astounding, from aromatic, dry whites, light roses and rustic reds to rich sweet and fruity sparkling. Its outsized abbey is still a draw along the pilgrimage route. The village is very small, mainly contained within medieval walls, parts of which still survive, along with three of its gates. Saint-Antonin followed in Cordes’ footsteps in 2015 and was also voted France’s favourite town. One of its many highlights is a 12th century market hall in the centre which comes to life on Sunday, market day. Not much more can be said about this jewel in the Tarn crown. Cordes is another must see bastide town, voted France’s favourite in 2014 and for good reason. The town is located on a hilltop, conveniently on the way to or from Toulouse so it can be a nice stop off for lunch on the way back to the airport. The town is perched up above the Lot and its winding streets provide plenty of opportunities for shopping as well as variety of stunning backdrops for lunch or dinner. Its quaintness is almost surreal, like many villages it's very well looked after and served by two very practical car parks, at the base and summit of the hill. The terrain is varied with plenty of singletrack, rocky descents and incredible views. The trail system in France is graded like in a ski resort: green for tootle, black for full throttle. Maps are available in the Najac tourist office for €3. The cave is equipped with bike racks and basic equipment to service your bike each day.
